The Origin and First Breakthrough (1933–1938)

Aramco traces its origins back to 1933, when a Concession Agreement was formally signed between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Standard Oil Company of California (SOCAL). A subsidiary, the California Arabian Standard Oil Company (CASOC), was immediately formed to administer the agreement and commence exploration. Operations began, and after extensive surveys of the Saudi desert, drilling was initiated in 1935. Despite years of minimal results, SOCAL leadership consulted Chief Geologist Max Steineke in 1937. Drawing upon his deep field experience, Steineke advised continued drilling efforts rather than retreating.

Perseverance was finally rewarded in 1938 with the successful start of commercial oil production from Dammam No. 7, later famously known as the “Prosperity Well.” This breakthrough marked the dawn of the Arabian oil era.

Radical Expansion and Infrastructure (1940s–1950s)

From the late 1940s onward, the organization, renamed Aramco (the Arabian American Oil Company), expanded rapidly, setting multiple record-breaking production milestones and significantly elevating Saudi Arabia’s global reputation as an energy powerhouse.

By 1949, crude oil production had reached 500,000 barrels per day.

This dramatic increase necessitated a proportional expansion in distribution. In 1950, the 1,212-kilometer Trans-Arabian Pipeline (Tapline) was completed. At the time, Tapline was the longest pipeline in the world, creating a vital link between eastern Saudi Arabia and the Mediterranean Sea, thereby significantly reducing the time and cost of exporting oil to European markets.

In 1951, following extensive exploration in the shallow waters of the Arabian Gulf, the Safaniyah field was discovered, which is now recognized as the world’s largest offshore oil field.

By 1958, Aramco’s crude oil production surpassed one million barrels per day.

Escalating Production and National Identity (1960s–1980s)
Production milestones continued to climb dramatically:

By 1962, cumulative crude oil production reached five billion barrels.

By 1971, average daily crude production climbed to 4.49 million barrels—demonstrating the enormous scale of operations.

Throughout the 1970s, the organization became a major economic contributor and deepened its connection to Saudi national identity. In 1973, the Saudi government acquired a 25% stake in Aramco, increasing it to 60% the following year. By 1980, Saudi Arabia increased its ownership to 100%.

Eight years later, in 1988, the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco) was formally established as the entity responsible for overseeing all operations. His Excellency Ali I. Al-Naimi became the first Saudi Company President in 1984 and the first Saudi President and CEO in 1988.

Global Integration and Downstream Expansion (1989–1990s)
In 1989, Saudi Aramco began its transformation from a company focused solely on oil production and export to a fully integrated petroleum enterprise. That year, Star Enterprises—a joint venture with Texaco—was established in the United States, which later evolved into Motiva (with Texaco and Shell). By 2017, Saudi Aramco became the sole owner of the largest single-site crude oil refinery in North America, located in Port Arthur, Texas.

International expansion accelerated during the 1990s, resulting in key partnerships and investments across major global markets:

1991: Acquired a 35% stake in the SsangYong Oil Refining Company (later renamed S-Oil in South Korea).

1994: Acquired a 40% interest in Petron Corporation, then the largest refiner and marketer in the Philippines.

1996: Investments extended to Europe with the acquisition of a 50% stake in Motor Oil (Hellas) Corinth Refineries S.A. and a 50% stake in its marketing affiliate.

Today, the organization maintains a significant presence across three major global energy regions—Asia, Europe, and North America.

Technological Leadership and Innovation (1997–Present)
Approaching the new millennium, technological advancement became essential for discovering, extracting, and managing crude oil resources with greater precision and efficiency.

In 1997, the POWERS (Parallel Oil-Water-Gas-Reservoir Simulator) system was developed, offering high-resolution simulation capabilities for predicting the performance of super-giant reservoirs.

In 2000, the company established the state-of-the-art Research and Development Center (R&DC) in Dhahran, which became the foundation for a global network of research centers.

A major milestone in reservoir innovation was achieved in 2010 with the introduction of GigaPOWERS, a giga-cell reservoir simulation technology.

Six years later, TeraPOWERS was introduced, becoming the world’s first trillion-cell reservoir simulation platform.

Transformation for a Sustainable Future

Throughout the early 2000s, diversification was essential for achieving the vision of becoming the world’s most advanced integrated energy and chemicals enterprise. The organization expanded beyond traditional energy markets, unlocking new value across a single barrel of oil through nonmetallic materials, crude-to-chemicals technologies, and advanced manufacturing pathways. Substantial investments were made in solutions that improve the efficiency of energy production and consumption, including initiatives aimed at reducing emissions from transportation systems.

Today, the organization stands as a leading global producer of energy and chemicals, powering worldwide commerce and improving daily lives by maintaining an uninterrupted supply of essential energy resources. The resilience and operational agility of the company have shaped one of the world’s largest integrated energy and chemicals enterprises, contributing to global efforts toward a low-carbon future. Looking ahead, the organization envisions transforming hydrocarbon resources into a wide range of new value streams while maintaining its long-standing role as a reliable provider of lower-carbon energy to global markets.
